Yamaguchi Momoe was born on January 17, 1959 in Tokyo, Japan. She lived with her grandparents for the first years of her life, then lived with her parents at age 4, her father left at a young age and Momoe learned to be responsible helping her mother take care of her little sister. Her family moved to Yokosuka when she was a teenager and that is where Momoe was discovered as a star. Momoe participated in the Star Tanjou program in 1972 at the age of 13 and made second place. Though she did not win the competition, Momoe was offered a record contract and was signed to Sony Music. In 1973 she debuted along with Mori Masako and Sakurada Junko and the three became known as the "Three Flowers Trio" (there is a picture below, Momoe is on the left.) Momoe's 1st single, "Toshigoro" did not fair well on the charts only earning her a 39th spot, it was her second single "Aoi kajitsu" that pushed her into musical success. Her mature voice was unique, smooth, and sultry and the lyrics she gave complimented that. Her songs at first were very controversial with their risque lyrics and her being so young, especially in her single "Hito natsu no keiken" which she released when she was only 14. Momoe refused to change her mature style, and it paid off, people liked her music more for it and the songs seemed to fit her singing style perfectly. Momoe began a small acting career in the mid 70s and fell in love with her fellow actor Miura Tomokazu. In 1979 Momoe released to the public that she and Miura were getting married and she was going to retire from her musical career. Though she only produced a few number ones, Momoe was one of the most influential idols of the 70s. Her decision to retire after only 8 years in the music business was a great shock to the public, as her career was at its peak, but she was greatly respected in her decision and that solidified her idol status even more. People wanted more Momoe, but since they knew they wouldn't be getting it, this caused an large increase in her single and album sales. Momoe retired in late 1980 and is still a topic today, while the public continues to wonder if Momoe will make a comeback. Momoe's most famous singles are: "Yokosuka Story", "Cosmos", "Ii hi tabidachi", and "Playback part 2."
